バレット：マリンはどこだ？！　ここにいるのか？！

Where’s Marlene!? Is she here!?

 

クラウド：バレット！

Barret!

 

バレット：すまねぇ、俺はバレット。マリンは俺の娘だ。あの子の服は・・・あ・・・ピンクだ！　今日はピンクの服を着ていた！

Sorry. I’m Barret. Marlene’s my little girl. She was wearing… Uh…pink! She was wearing a pink dress today!

 

エルマイラ：二階で眠ってるよ。

眠ってるって言ったでしょ！

She’s sleeping upstairs.

I said she’s sleeping!

 

ティファ：私もマリンの顔を見たいな。さあ、のぞいて見てこよう。

I wanna see her too. C’mon. Let’s go look in on her.

 

■look in on sb/sth (phrase) to visit sb/sth for a short time（フレーズ）（人）をちょっと訪ねる、ちょっとのぞいて見る

 

バレット：マリン・・・ああ、良かった。

Marlene…my baby. Thank god.

 

エルマイラ：私の娘は神羅のところだよ。

Shinra has my daughter now.

 

クラウド：すまない。

I’m sorry.

 

ティファ：違う、エアリスにマリンのことを頼んだのは私です。出会ったばかりなのに、とても優しくて力になってくれた。彼女の人の好さに甘えてしまいました。

No. I’m the one who asked her to go get Marlene. We’d only just met, but she was so kind and helpful. I…took advantage of her.

エルマイラ：あんたらのせいじゃない。神羅に戻ることになるのは時間の問題だったのさ。

It’s not your fault. It was only a matter of time before she ended up back there.

 

■a matter of time (phrase) If you say that sth is just a matter of time, you mean that it is certain to happen at some time in the future（フレーズ）時間の問題

 

クラウド：エアリスが古代種だから・・・だな？

Because she’s an Ancient. That it?

エルマイラ：そう、エアリスはそのことをあんたに話したのかい？ あんたらのこと、すごく信頼してたんだね・・・。

そう。エアリスは古代種。おそらく、最後の生き残りだ。あの子は私の娘じゃないんだ。ああ、血の繋がりって意味でね・・・。

So she told you about that? She must trust you all a great deal…

Yes. Aerith is an Ancient. Probably the last one living. She’s not my daughter. Not by blood, I mean. If that’s what you were wondering…

エルマイラ：15年くらい前、兵士の夫が最前線に送られた。でもそれから、休暇で戻るという手紙を受け取った。だから約束の日、夫を迎えに駅へ行ったんだ。

About fifteen years ago… My husband, he’d been shipped off to fight on the front lines. But then I received a letter saying he’d be home for a bit. So when the day came, I went to the station to meet him…

 

■ship off (phrase) to send sb somewhere, usually when they do not want to go （フレーズ）〈人を〉～へ送り出す、～へ追いやる

 

エルマイラ：でも・・・あの人は帰って来なかった。どうしても最悪を想像してしまって・・・でも、夫の休暇は延期されたんだって自分に言い聞かせた。毎日駅に出向いて祈りながら待った・・・。

But…he didn’t come. I couldn’t help fearing the worst, even then…but I told myself his leave must’ve been postponed, that he’d been delayed. Every day I went, to wait, and to pray…

 

■postpone (v) to delay an event and plan or decide that it should happen at a later date or time（動） ～を延期する、当面見合わせる

■leave (n) time allowed away from work for a holiday or illness（名）〔勤務先・軍隊などで許可される（有給の）〕休暇

 

エルマイラ：そうして出会ったんだ。エアリスとその母親に。ウォールマーケットから逃げてきたのかも、と思った。もしくは、何かつらい目にあったプレートの上の住人だったのか・・・。そういうのをよく目にしてたから。

And that’s how I met her. Her and her mother. I thought maybe they’d run away from Wall Market. Or that they were topsiders fallen on hard times. I’d seen that sort of thing a lot.

 

■fall on hard times (phrase) to lose your money and start to have a difficult life（フレーズ）つらい目に遭う

 

エルマイラ：「エアリスをどこか安全な場所に連れて行って」。それがエアリスの母親の臨終の言葉だった。

“Take Aerith somewhere safe.” Those were her mother’s dying words.
