英語字幕・日本語訳 (FF7R part 71 “変えられない運命”)

ティファ：クラウド。

Cloud.

 

エアリス：ああ、良かった。目、覚めた。

Oh, thank goodness. You’re awake.

 

ティファ：大丈夫？

You okay?

 

クラウド：ああ。俺たち、どこにいるんだ？

Yeah. Where are we?

 

エアリス：私が暮らしていたところ――私がまだ子どもだった頃。毎朝、彼らがやってきてお母さんを連れて行ってた。ここで一人で泣いていたのを覚えてる。

Where I lived—when I was still a child. Every morning, they’d come and take my mom away. I remember crying here alone.

 

■would (modal verb) used to talk about things in the past that happened often or always（法助）かつて～だった

 

クラウド：エアリス。ここから脱出する前に話してくれ。知らないことがたくさんある。

…Aerith. Before we break outta here, talk to us. There’s so much we don’t know.

エアリス：私は・・・古代種の末裔なの。本当にただそれだけ。あ、それとね、それ本当の名前じゃないの。彼らは自分たちのことを・・・セトラと呼んでいたんだ。

I’m…a descendent of the Ancients. That’s pretty much it, really. Oh, but just so you know, that’s not their actual name. They called themselves…the Cetra.

■ancient (n) a person who lived in times long past（名）古代人

■grace (n) approval or kindness, especially (in the Christian religion) that is freely given by God to all humans（名）恩寵、神の愛

■providence (n) an influence that is not human in origin and is thought to control people’s lives（名）摂理、神の導き

 

エアリス：知ってるんだね。

バレット：ああ、まあ・・・正気なところ、その部分は単なるおとぎ話だと思ってた。

Yeah, well… Honestly I thought that part was just a fairy tale.

 

エアリス：神羅は本当だと思ってるの。長年その約束の地を探してるんだ。

Shinra thinks it’s true. They’ve been searching for the promised land for a long time.

 

ティファ：そしてエアリスがそこへ自分達を連れて行ってくれると信じてるんだね・・・そうなの？

And they must think you can lead them to it… Can you?

 

エアリス：ううん。いつか、もしかしたら見つかるかもね。でも今は、見つけたいと思ってもムリ。

Nope. Someday, maybe, I’ll find it in me. But now? Not even if I wanted to.

 

バレット：たとえ見つけられたとしても、その地は古代種――つまり・・・エアリス達のものだ。神羅は魔晄に溢れた場所だと信じてそこを狙ってる。あいつらに魔晄を自分たちの物だと主張する権利はねぇ。だがどうであろうとヤツらは手に入れようとしてくる。止まることを知らねぇ強欲な野郎どもだ。

Even if you could, that land belongs to the—I mean… To you and your people. Shinra’s after it because they believe it’s rich in mako—mako they’ve got no right to claim. But they’ll try to take it anyway, won’t they? Hmph. Greedy bastards’ll never stop.

Oh, great. These assholes again! Probably some Shinra science experiment.

レッドVIII：ウィスパーズだ。たぶん、運命の番人と説明するのが一番しっくりくるだろう。

Whispers. Perhaps best described as arbiters of fate.

■arbiter (n) sb who makes a judgment, solves an argument, or decides what will be done（名）調停者、権威者

■fate (n) what happens to a particular person or thing, especially sth final or negative, such as death or defeat（名）宿命、自分の力では変えられない運命（ネガティブ）

They are drawn to those who attempt to alter destiny’s course and ensure they do not.

レッドVIII：始まりから終わりまでの、星の大いなる河の流れのことだ。

The flow of the great river that is the planet, from inception to oblivion.

■oblivion (n) the state of being completely forgotten/destroyed（名）忘れられている状態、忘却、破壊された状態

 

ティファ：あなたはその流れが・・・決まっているって言うの？

And you’re saying that that flow is somehow…fixed?

 

■fix (v)1. arranged or decided already and not able to be changed  2. to repair something（動）1. 固定した、2. 修理する

 

＊この文って、「運命の流れは固定されている」とも「運命の流れが修正される」とも訳せるんですよね。まあ、「ウィスパーズが運命を修正することによって流れが固定されている」というわけなので、どっちとも同じ内容になりますけどね。ちなみに日本語版は「その流れはもう決まっている・・・そういうこと？」となっています。

 

レッドVIII：そうだ。それが星の意思だからだ。
