(Chapter 5: Side B  part 5)

Please. I know this is hard to accept. You all trust him. I did, too. But I’m telling the truth.

I believe you. Of course I do.

I believe you, too. I’m horrified. And shocked. And…still processing everything. But I believe you.

■horrified (a) very shocked(形)怖がっている

■process (v) to think about a difficult or sad situation so that you can gradually accept it(動)処理する

Ms. Harmon, please remember the terms of your settlement.

■terms (n) the conditions that are part of an agreement or arrangement(名)〔契約で同意された〕条項、条件

■settlement (n) an official agreement intended to resolve a dispute or conflict(名)示談、合意

Screw your settlement! I would never take that money!

■screw sb/sth (v) A rude and angry expression of disgust or dissatisfaction with sb/sth(動)~なんてどうでもいい、くだらない

I would like to speak. This young lady came to Haven as a stranger, but over the last few weeks, she’s become one of us. Now, her story certainly seems unlikely, if not impossible. But she deserves at least an investigation of her claims. We ought to take her seriously.

■certainly (adv) used to emphasize the speaker’s belief that what is said is true(副)確かに、必ず

Duckie, you’re being unhelpful. Alex, sweetheart. You know our mind can play tricks on us. None of it is your fault. It’s so hard to admit you need help. But struggling alone…no, you shouldn’t have to go through that. We’re all worried about you. Let us help you.

■unhelpful (a) not improving a difficult situation(形)助けにならない

*「You are unhelpful.」と「You are being unhelpful.」 もし「You are unhelpful.」

■play a trick on (phrase) behave in a deceptive or teasing way towards(フレーズ)(人)に一杯食わす、(人)にいたずらをする

■fault (n) a mistake, especially sth for which you are to blame(名)失敗・過失・罪

Please. You’re a cop. You can do something.

■coward (n) a person who is not brave and is too eager to avoid danger, difficulty, or pain(名)臆病者

Why are you doing this?

What?

My dad is not a murderer. Were you afraid we couldn’t get Typhon? Is that why you need someone else to blame? I thought we were in this together. For Gabe.

■murderer (n) a person who commits murder(名)殺人者

■blame (v) to say or think that sb/sth did sth wrong(動)非難する

Ryan—

No, I’m not gonna let you do that to me anymore.

Ryan, what the hell? I know he’s your dad but look at her! Why would she lie about this?

Fuck you, Ryan! Afer everything? Seriously, fuck you.

Stop.
