(Chapter 5: Side B  part 8)

But here’s something. It’s three hours from now. A bus pulls away. You’re not on it. Ryan approves. Life goes on. You go back to work. You settle in to a routine. One day, with almost no warning, Steph up and bolts town. It hurts.

■pull away (phrase) If a vehicle pulls away, it starts moving(フレーズ)〔車が〕発車して離れて行く

■settle in (phrase) to become familiar with somewhere new(フレーズ)〔新しい住居・環境などに〕馴れる、馴染む、落ち着く

■up and … (v) used with another verb to emphasize that sb left a place or did sth in a sudden and possibly unexpected way(動)〈話〉〔人が〕突然・出し抜けに~する(up and doで用い、doで「~する」を表す)

After dinner they just upped and left without saying goodbye.

■bolt (v) to dart off or away(動)駆け去る、逃げるように立ち去る

But she does offer you a going away present: her job. you take it. All those years of being a music snob finally pay off. And little by little, time does its thing. The apartment starts to feel less like a museum and more like a home.

■going-away (a) marking or celebrating a departure(形)別れの、餞別の

■snob (n) a person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to those of other people(名)俗物、お高くとまった人、嫌なやつ、気取り屋でお高いやつ、てんぐ

Thoughts of Jed, of Typhon, even of me, begin to fade into the background.

The rooftop is your stage. You perform every week to a small but adoring group of fans. Maybe, while you play, you wonder what could have been. Performing for more people, in more cities. Sharing your music with the world. Or maybe you never think about that much at all.

■fade (v) to become less clear and then disappears(動)消えていく、薄れる

■fade into the background(フレーズ)目立たなくなる、影が薄くなる

■adoring (a) feeling or expressing deep affection, love, or admiration(形)愛情を込めた、熱愛する

You don’t know exactly when it happends. But one day, you look around and find that you have transformed this place just as much as it has transformed you. And the most extraordinary thing of all is just how normal it feels. You don’t question it. You don’t doubt it, or wonder what might have been. It’s your life, the life you fought so hard to have. And for the first time in a long time, you just live.

■transform (v) make a marked change in the form, nature, or appearance of(動)〔~の状態・形・外観・性質・機能などを〕変える

Don’t mention it.

■Don’t mention it (phrase) a polite expression used to indicate that thanks or an apology are not necessary(フレーズ)どういたしまして(お礼やお詫びの言葉に対する返答として日常的に使われるフレーズ)

You really think I’ll “transform” Haven?

■transform (v) make a marked change in the form, nature, or appearance of(動)〔~の状態・形・外観・性質・機能などを〕変える

Of course. you already have. With your gift, your music. Just by being you. But Alex, that doesn’t mean you have to stay. You have the potential to do that anywhere you go.

■gift (n) a special or unusual ability; a talent(名)〔特別な〕才能、資質(神から与えられたものと考える)

■potential (n) sb’s or sth’s ability to develop, achieve, or succeed(名)可能性、潜在力、将来性

Where am I supposed to go? I don’t have any other home.

■be supposed to (phrase) to have to; to have a duty or a responsibility to / to be intended to(フレーズ)~することになっている、~を期待される

That’s true. But you didn’t have any home before coming here, and look what happened.

The truth is, there’s no telling what that version of your future might be. The only promise is the adventure. So, what do you think?

■there is no telling (phrase) used to convey the impossibility of knowing what has happdenor will happen(フレーズ)断言できない、なんとも言えない

I know what I want.
