Who the hell are you people?

Hi. I’m Clementine. This is Lee and Kenny.

Hi. My name’s Molly. You guys really aren’t from Crawford, are you?

No, I’m from Macon. Kenny here’s from Florida.

She didn’t ask for our life stories, Lee. What’s the deal with this Crawford place?

■What’s the deal with (something) ? (phrase) This is a question that you can ask to get general information about sth(フレーズ)~はどうなってるの?

You sure you wanna know? When everything started going to shit, some people got together and sealed off that whole neighborhood. Folks willing to do anything to stay alive, stop the dead getting in. I try to avoid ‘em.

■seal off (phrase) to prevent all approach to, or exit from

■folk (n) (US usually folks) people, especially those of a particular group or type(名)(通常folks)人々

Why?

Let’s just say they have a zero-tolerance policy for anyone who won’t–or can’t–live by their rules.

■zero tolerance (n) refusal to accept antisocial behaviour, typically by strict and uncompromising application of the law(名)小さな悪事であろうと、法律違反者を容赦なく厳しく罰すること

■live by (phrase) behave according to beliefs or principles(フレーズ)〔信条・規則など〕に従って生きる、~を人生・行動の指針とする

So how’d you know we weren’t them?

Because there are no children in Crawford. Not anymore.

What do you mean, no children? Why not?

No children, no elderly, no one with an advanced medical condition. Basically no one who might be a burden on the community. Crawford’s all about the survival of the fittest. That’s how they survived.

Look, I’m gonna ask you people again: you’re not from Crawford, so who the hell are you? What are you doing here?

We came down here looking for a boat, hoping to get our people out of here and find someplace safe.

Yeah, good luck with that. Anyone with a boat took it out of here as soon as people started eating each other. Any that got left behind, Crawford stripped ‘em for parts. Cars too.

■Good luck with that. (phrase) a sarcastic expression that someone uses when they think that the likelihood of an action will have no effect in a person’s favor.(フレーズ)(皮肉をこめて)幸運を祈る

There’s gotta be something.

If there was, do you think I’d still be here? I’ve been over every inch of this city, this whole place is picked clean.

■every inch of sth (phrase) all of sth(フレーズ)~の至る所、~のどこもかしこも

Goddamn it! Fuck!

Hey! Moron! You wanna keep your voice down?

■moron (n) an offensive word for someone who you think is very stupid; idiot

Shit.

Since you’re not getting on any boat, I’d advise you folks to go back to where you came from, before–Great. Just great.

■folk (n) (US usually folks) people, especially those of a particular group or type(名)(通常folks)人々

Molly, is there a–Hey! You’re just gonna leave us here?

Don’t leave us here! Please?

Come on! Make it fast!

Lee! Come on!

C’mon, Lee, get your ass outta there!

Gah! Can’t get it open!

Here! Use that to pry it open!

■pry open (phrase) to force open with a lever(フレーズ)〔ドア・ふたなどを〕こじ開ける

Leeee!

Clementine! Can you hear me?! If you can hear me, just get back to the house, okay? I’ll meet you there!
