英語字幕・日本語訳 (p49 エアリスの幼少期)

エルマイラ：夫が長いこと不在で、私は寂しかった。だからエアリスにとって私と一緒にいるのが一番安全なんだって、そう自分を納得させてあの子を連れ帰った。

My husband had been away for so long, and I was lonely. So I convinced myself the safest place for the girl was with me.

 

■convince (v) to make sb believe that sth is true （動）確信させる、納得させる、説得する

 

エルマイラ：家族のように仲良くなるのに時間はかからなかった。あの子はよくしゃべる子でねぇ。いろいろ不思議な話をしてくれたよ・・・自分とお母さんが施設のようなところからどうやって逃げ出したかとか・・・お母さんはただ自分たちの星に帰っただけだから悲しくないだとか・・・。

It took no time at all for her to start feeling like family. She was a real chatterbox. She told me strange stories… Like how she and her mother had escaped from some sort of facility… And how she wasn’t sad because her mother had just…”returned to their planet.”

 

■chatterbox (n) a person, especially a child, who talks a lot（名）〈話〉よくしゃべる人、おしゃべり

 

バレット：自分たちの星、か。ああ、そうだな。

Their planet, huh? Yeah, that sounds about right.

エルマイラ：あの時は私にはちっとも分からなかった。それは夜空の星のことかと聞いても、違う、この星だって言われて。それに対して何て言えばいいか・・・。

I didn’t understand any of it at the time. When I asked if she meant one in the sky… She said no, this one. Right here. I mean…what can you say to that…?

 

エアリス：お母さん、悲しまないでね。

Mommy, don’t be sad.

 

エルマイラ：ある日突然、エアリスがそう言った。

That’s what she said to me one day, out of the blue.

エルマイラ：だから尋ねたの。「何かあったのかい」って。

So I asked her, “What’s wrong?”

 

エアリス：お母さんがすごく好きだった男の人が死んだの。その人の心がサヨナラを言いに、はるばるやって来たの。でも、星に帰らなきゃいけないから、ここにはいられなかったの。

A man you really, really love just died. His heart came a long way to say goodbye. But he couldn’t stay, ‘cause he had to return to the planet.

エルマイラ：もちろん、信じなかった。でもそれから数日後、夫が戦死したという手紙を受け取った。そうんなふうに、エアリスはただ分かっているんだ。いろいろあったけど、私達は幸せだった。

そして人が訪ねてきた。

I didn’t believe her, of course. And then, a few days later, I received a letter saying my husband had been killed in action. Things like that, she’d just know. It was a lot to deal with, but we were happy. And then came the knock.

エアリス：は～い！

イヤだ・・・帰って！

Coming!

No… Go away!

Aerith… You know you’re not just any little girl. You’re a descendant of the Ancients.

エルマイラ：彼が何を言っているのか分からなかったから「古代種とは誰？」と聞いたよ。

I had no idea what he meant, so I said, “Who are the Ancients?”

 

ツォン：彼らは星に仕えた者たちで、彼らの無限の知識と知恵が我々を約束の地へと導いてくれるのです。

They were the original stewards of the planet whose boundless knowledge and wisdom shall guide us to the promised land.
