英語字幕・日本語訳 (p52 エアリスとの夜)

クラウド：どうやって・・・。これは夢なのか？

How is this…? Is this a dream?

 

エアリス：さて、どうでしょう。

Maybe. You tell me.

 

■You tell me. (phrase) used to say when you’re ordering some one to tell you sth（フレーズ）私は知らないから、あなたが私に教えてよ

 

クラウド：大丈夫か？

You okay?

 

エアリス：大丈夫に見えない？ すごく幼い頃、神羅ビルに住んでたんだ。

Don’t I look it? I used to live in the Shinra Building, back when I was really little.

 

■used to (phrase) done or experienced in the past, but no longer done or experienced（フレーズ）よく～したものだ、昔は～していた

 

クラウド：エルマイラに聞いた。

Your mom told us.

 

エアリス：そっか。だからね、子供時代に過ごした家に戻ったような感じなの。まあ、そこまで居心地は悪くないんだ。

Right. So it kinda feels like I’ve gone back to my childhood home, you know? Honestly, it’s not that bad.

 

クラウド：なんだ、エアリスはそこにいたいのか？

So what, you wanna stay?

 

エアリス：ちょっと、クラウド。バカなこと言わないで。

C’mon, Cloud. Don’t be silly.

クラウド：エルマイラも心配している。

Your mom’s really worried too.

 

エアリス：も？　ってことは、クラウドも私のこと心配？

“Too”? So you’re worried about me?

 

クラウド：もちろんだ。

Of course I am.

 

エアリス：心配かけてゴメンね、本当に。

I’m sorry about that. Really.

 

クラウド：あれは・・・。

Is that…?

 

エアリス：人はいずれ死ぬの。

Everyone dies eventually.

 

■eventually (adv) in the end（副）そのうち、ゆくゆくは

 

クラウド：だろうな。

I suppose.

 

■suppose (v) to think that sth is likely to be true（動）〔明確な根拠はないが～だと〕思う、考える

 

エアリス：だから自分らしく、人生を精いっぱい生きなくちゃ。一瞬一瞬が大切なの。

So we need to make the most of the time we have—to live our lives the way we wanna live. Every minute…every moment, matters.

 

■make the most of (phrase) to take full advantage of sth because it may not last long（フレーズ）～を最大限に利用・活用する、～を思い切り楽しむ

■matter (v) to be important, or to affect what happens（動）重要である

 

クラウド：覚えておこう。

I’ll remember that.

 

エアリス：うん。だからね・・・

Good. So…

 

クラウド：この一瞬をちゃんと受け止める、だろ？

You need to embrace this moment. Right?

 

■embrace (v) to accept sth enthusiastically（動）ちゃんと・熱心に受け止める

 

エアリス：クラウドに出会えてよかった。本当だよ。交わした言葉も一緒に過ごした時間や記憶も、すべて宝物。クラウドが思う以上に、私を幸せにしてくれた。クラウドがくれたもの、ずっと大切に胸にしまっておくよ。

I’m glad I met you, Cloud. I really am. I’m grateful for all the words we’ve shared. For all the moments and the memories. You’ve made me more happy than you know. And I’ll always cherish what you’ve given me.

 

■be grateful for (phrase) feeling or showing an appreciation for sth done or received（フレーズ） ～に感謝している

■cherish (v) to love, protect, and care for sb/sth that is important to you （動）～を大切にする、心にしまっておく

 

エアリス：でも・・・でもね、何が起ころうと、私のこと好きにならないでね。好きだと思ったとしても・・・その気持ちは本物じゃないから。

But… But whatever happens, you can’t fall in love with me. Even if you think you have…it’s not real.

 

＊「can」には「可能性：～できる」と「許可：～してもいよい」の意味がありますが、ここの「can’t」は今のところ（2021年２月現在）どちらの意味にもとれますね。通常なら「許可」の「can」で決まりな場面ですが、エアリスはどうやら未来のことを知っているような描写がされているので、何らかの理由で文字通り「クラウドはエアリスを好きになることができない」ことを知っていて「できないよ」と言っているかもしれないのです。このあたりは続編でハッキリ分かるのではないでしょうか。

 

クラウド：俺に発言権はないのか？

Do I get a say in all this?

 

■get a say in sth (phrase) to have or attain an active and participatory role in making or influencing a decision about sth（フレーズ）～に発言権がある、影響力を持つ

 

エアリス：もう朝。行かなくちゃ。

It’s almost morning. Time to go.

 

クラウド：エアリスを迎えに行く。

I’m coming for you.

 

エアリス：もしクラウドがそうしたいなら・・・ありがとう。
